Prickly

A not so fun morning digging up prickly pears. We don't have a lot of them on the farm. They are here and there and they are a nuisance. What works best for us with a small amount to remove is to dig them up, trying to get all of the root system and burn them.

Have to be careful though, the spikes are nasty. I'm glad to say my job was not digging. I was on wood collecting duty.

The fruit is spectacular to look at when cut. Jewel like with such an amazing colour but the ones I have tasted have been a little underwhelming. It's definitely relegated to the weed status here.

I was glad to have a nice place to work today. And a fire to keep warm while doing it.

very cool to see. Are they like a catcus? Could you survive on it if lost in the bush?? Does it have a liquid in the pods???

I do love the location shots on your farm, absolutely the kind of landscape I want to be looking at every day when we make our move to the country. The prickly pear plants are funny - I used to really like them. They remind me of a long ago trip to Portugal. T x

There seems to be getting more and more of it around the place. There is even a couple of plants that I pass on the way to work each day. We were amazed at how much is in southern Qld last home we were up that way. Cacta blastis doesn't seem to be keeping it under control any more. Good on you for keeping it under control at your place. We just have to deal with Yass tussock, blackberries and thistles. And we have lots to deal with this coming spring, if we are still here.

It's a member of cactus family I think, we usually call it 'enthong-enthongan', enthong is a tool used to move rice from ricebowl into a plate. Nice work, Tracy!

We had the sun out here today. Having a fire on would have been nice though. The wind is quite chilly. Does it smell when you burn the cactus? I also just wanted to tell you that I have nominated you for The Versatile Blogger Award. It is up on my blog, I would love you to go and have a look x
