Weaning and Waiting

Trilby and Teddy

Weaning. Trilby is being weaned and she is not happy. Teddy is none to happy either because he is away from the other cattle and only has a calf and our crotchety old ram, Crinkles, for company. For such small cattle, they sure make their feelings known. Bellowing enough for a whole herd. The mothers aren't concerned at all.

Waiting. Unbeknownst to Teddy, he is in waiting for the butcher. I don't give advice but if I did, I would suggest that you a) do not name your future meat and b) do not have cute 'meat' that children become attached to.

Attachment or not, they are really gorgeous. It may sound strange but the way they live is the ideal way for them to become produce. if that makes sense.

the reality of farm life.....Some times some pet sheep have just disappeared not told the kids where too when they were littler.......but it is the circle of life and it must go around if we are to live......

Oh dear! I can see your dilemma. Even my Mick said he would have trouble eating Teddy. So much easier when they are just another ordinary cow like all the others. Good luck with it.

They are so adorable, Tracy. I would never make a farmer of cattle. I follow author James Oswald in Scotland who is first a farmer of Highlands and sheep and then an author. I love his pics of the animals. He recently said one calf he was weaning jumped several fences to get to his mum and had to put up in the barn for a few days. A beautiful life until dinner time!

Or, that your blog readers get attached to. :) Oh, dear.
(but I am a meat eater, so can't be hypocritical!) This is life.

Your cattle are very handsome, they must be a heritage breed. Oh dear, don't tell Teddy what is ahead.

We always named our MEAT things like.... hamburger, roast, pot luck, fried chicken, etc... no doubt where their destiny lied.
